A charming Victorian earthenware jug by Edwards & Sons of Staffordshire, dating to the late 19th century and decorated in the “Vernal” pattern. The body is adorned with delicate wildflowers and foliage, executed in transfer print with hand-painted coloring, enhanced by a scalloped rim and graceful handle in the typical Victorian style. Chunky and wide in form, the jug has a beautiful, substantial presence that makes it especially decorative and striking on display. The maker’s mark on the base, featuring a ribbon cartouche with “VERNAL” above the initials E.S., securely attributes the piece to Edwards & Sons of Burslem. Its age is further supported by the combination of transfer decoration with hand enameling, fine glaze crazing, and a hand-painted pattern number beneath. Condition is very good overall, with one small tear to the back side (visible in photos) and otherwise only minimal surface wear. A decorative, collectible, and finely crafted example of 19th century Staffordshire pottery.
