No.2 Hinks Patent Lever double wick burner, fully functional and complete in all original components. The burner is stamped “No.2 Hinks Lever” and “Hinks & Sons Patent”, markings consistent with production shortly after the lever mechanism was introduced in 1865, dating this example to the circa 1870-1885 period. The same Hinks & Sons Patent marking also appears on the neck where the burner is set, confirming that both burner and lamp are original to each other.
The lamp features a finely etched glass globe shade with an inner glass chimney, a marbled blue glass tank and an ornate cast-brass Corinthian base. The patented Hinks design includes a key mechanism allowing the burner to be raised for lighting without removing the chimney, and an integrated snuffer lever to extinguish the flame.
All parts disassemble into four sections for maintenance and transport, and every mechanism, including the double-wick burner, raising key, and snuffer, is in perfect working order. This is a rare, high quality survivor demonstrating the peak of 19th-century British oil lamp engineering and craftsmanship.
