A finely executed example of early twentieth-century Japanese export porcelain, this plate is decorated in the Satsuma style, featuring intricate hand painting, raised enamels, and lavish gilding on a smooth, translucent porcelain body.
The composition presents Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, accompanied by a single Arhat (Rakan), one of the Buddha’s enlightened disciples. The reverse bears the red seal mark Dai Nippon Tokusei, signifying “Specially Made in Great Japan,” a hallmark of high quality Taisho-era export ware.
A steel hanger has been fitted to the back, allowing the piece to be displayed as an elegant wall hanging, in keeping with its original purpose as a decorative item.
