Napoleon III period (Second Empire, circa 1860–1870) French Porcelain Vase

Napoleon III period (Second Empire, circa 1860–1870) French Porcelain Vase

Sold Out

Hand painted with a coastal scene depicting boats at sea and a distant volcanic eruption, likely Mount Vesuvius. The soft pink ground is delicately framed with burnished gilt borders, while ornate twin handles in rich gold relief add a striking neoclassical presence.

Its age and authenticity are confirmed by several factors. The refined color palette and classical form are typical of mid 19th century Paris porcelain in the Sèvres tradition. Close inspection under magnification reveals freehand brushwork, confirming that the scene is entirely hand-painted rather than transfer print. The thick, warm gilding has been applied and burnished by hand, showing subtle, even wear consistent with genuine period craftsmanship.

The vase remains in very good overall condition. One wing of the bird at right hand gilt handle is broken, though this is not visible from the front and can only be detected from the back. This minor imperfection does not detract from its impressive display quality.

A fine collector’s piece, this vase exemplifies the elegance and artistry of Second Empire porcelain and reflects the luxurious taste of the Napoleon III era.
